AGP instigated Kakopathar incident: Gogoi

Guwahati, Feb 21: Accusing opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) of allegedly instigating the people in Upper Assam's Kakopathar leading to the police firing which claimed eight lives, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the government has evidence of it.

"We have got evidence of some of the AGP leaders involvement behind the violence which subsequently took place in Kakopathar on February 10," Gogoi told a press conference here.

While the AGP was bent on imposition of President's rule in the state due to the police firing, it had not yet demanded a judicial probe. "That alone proves its involvement in the incidents," he claimed.

The government, Gogoi said, was ready to order a CBI probe if there was a demand.

A judicial inquiry is already on, he said.

At least eight people were killed and several others injured in police firing and one CRPF jawan was lynched at Kakopathar on February 10 when demonstrators, protesting the death of a suspected ULFA activist allegedly in army custody, clashed with security personnel.
